Sarah Munro

Artistic Manager, Tramway

Sarah Munro

"Sarah stands out because of her approach as an inspiring and inclusive leader. She manages change and deals with complexity by being open, inclusive and always questioning. Sarah listens, observes, invites, engages, inspires, questions, supports and challenges all those around her."

An inspiring and inclusive leader, Sarah keeps the artist and audience at the heart of her work, evident in her innovative tenures as Director of the Collective Gallery in Edinburgh and most recently at Tramway.   While initiating ground breaking new projects, like the One Mile programme in 2006, described as ‘agenda setting’ by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Sarah ensures her staff are also on the journey of discovery and their ideas are valued and their contributions welcome.

Always focused on supporting the artists through a unique approach of both nurturing and challenging, Sarah never stints from inspiring those around her to achieve great things on often limited funds.  Innovating new approaches to audience she is unafraid to challenge established conventions.

Since joining Tramway in 2008, she led the organisation through difficult times while re-visioning the visual arts programme and placing the relationship and engagement with the public at the centre of the organisation’s thinking.  This strategy resulted in an increase in audience figures of nearly 150%.

As a leader, Sarah manages change and deals with complexity by being open, inclusive and always questioning.  Embracing change, she supports staff through and challenges them to take part in the process of change.
